I have trouble viewing pictures in email, and sometimes they change. Why?

Problem Viewing Pictures in Email

Here are some common issues related to viewing pictures in email:
  • Cant view pictures inside Webmail program.

    • For security reasons, Webmail is not able to display some pictures that are inserted inside email messages. To be able to view these pictures try to setup the email address inside another program, for example, Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, or Vista Mail. The email clients should be able to display those pictures blocked by the Webmail program if it is due to the security issue.

  • Other people are sending pictures through email and they aren't coming through. There are two common reasons for this issue:

    • The email client being used, such as Outlook Express, has security feature turned on that block images from being viewed in email.
To check this setting in Outlook Express, click on Tools and select Options...  Inside there, click on the Security tab, and uncheck Block images and other external content in HTML e-mail.  Other email clients should have something similar inside the options or preferences.

    • The picture someone tried to send to the email address may be too large. Most email systems will not transmit pictures over 10 MB in size.  If this is the case, the sender will get a bounce back email saying that it could not be sent.  To prevent this problem, compression programs can be used to zip images. Compressing the files will enable larger files to be sent.

    • For information about attachments, click on the articles below:

    • A picture was sent in an email message, I recipient received the email, but there was not picture attached.

      • Pictures increase the size of  email messages. Because of this, some email programs have an option that allows users to select if they want the pictures to be sent with the email message or not. This setting might be turned off in the email program. In Outlook Express this setting can be checked inside the New Message window by going to Format, and making sure there is a check in the box beside Send Pictures with Message.

    • An email message was received with pictures. When the email message is looked at again, the pictures have changed.

      • This normally is caused when an HTML advertisement within an email has changed. The advertiser changes the HTML that the picture in the email is linked to, so that when it is viewed, the changes are displayed also.
